First Selectman

Middlefield enjoys a truly New England-style form of Government. In the purest sense, the people exercise their power and wishes through assorted Town Meetings throughout the year and via a three-person Board of Selectmen who are elected every two years.

The office of the Board of Selectmen evolved from the 1600s to its present form and function, which is to "superintend the concerns of the Town". From this simple statement of purpose rises a vast assortment of powers and duties that the Board deals with. The First Selectman position is noted as being the Chief Executive Officer, which is currently held by Robert Yamartino.

Specific Duties that must be provided include:

  • Public safety
  • Health and Sanitation
  • Maintaining the Town Charter
  • Fire and Police
  • Collective Bargaining/ Employees
  • Roads and Bridges
  • Education
  • Planning and Zoning
  • Animal Control
  • Public Utilities
  • Records and Documents
  • Traffic Regulation
  • Welfare
  • Trees and Forest Management
  • Housing
  • Keep the Peace

Information and communication with our residents are critical for good government, and we want our citizens to be informed and involved in our community in every way.
